Drug Honkey- Cloak Of Skies Review

Ah, Drug Honkey– two of my least favorite things, combining to play my least favorite musical style. Stoner sludge and bad names seem to go together like the volume on porn and an empty house. I always try to give this stuff a chance, though, because sometimes there is a true gem hiding amongst the lumps of coal and dried dogshit that litter the Psycho Las Vegas B-Stage lineup.

Just kidding– all of this shit sucks, and Drug Honkey exceptionally so on Cloak of Skies. That’s even an awful senseless title. The entirety of the name, genre, and title are basically a sign next to the carnival ride of this mess that says “You must be at least THIS high to enter”, featuring a picture of Snoop Dogg smoking a smaller Snoop Dogg. And when I say mess, I mean a MESS of a mess. At exactly one moment during this catastrophe (the only song where the band expresses any interest in songwriting or creativity, “Outlet of Hatred”) was I enjoying myself. The rest of this had me praying either the album would end or I would die in a fiery auto wreck, both preferrable to actually listening.

What makes Cloak of Skies so bad? Is it the complete lack of drive or initiative to put anything together resembling a song? It absolutely is. If there even are guitars on this (and I’m not checking), no one bothered to write any riffs or play audibly. The vocals are shouted, which doesn’t fit with the extreme lack of anything heavy presented. The drums– well, it’s stoner sludge. You don’t exactly need George Kollias behind the kit to play at 4 bpm. And yet somehow, Drug Honkey have managed to make them even more boring than usual, burying them in the mix behind that hideous, rattly bass.

Cloak of Skies is quite a feat in that it has found new and inventive ways to make a horrid sound even less interesting. In a perfect world, this band goes back in time to break up and we never suffer through this ordeal in 2017.
