You Mighta Missed It

March 2014

Your monthly source for sorting out the mess of new metal.

Under the Radar:

Ars Moriendi - La singulière noirceur d'un astre

Home Base: Clermont-Ferrand, France
RIYL: Practicing your grimace in every reflective surface as an involuntary reaction.
Pedigree: Notre Amertume

This is for the lifers, the scowlers who skip the sound scientists and bestow the killing blow upon the executioners. Ars Moriendi amasses a collection of styles recently receiving 20 year retrospectives. Still, sole proprietor Arsonist finds a way to dust without tarnishing the legacy. Wrist-carving guitars, symphonic synth sweeps, dynamic chamber asides lulling one into a false sense of security: all of black metal's best traits are here, shaped similarly to the swirling stroke exemplified by the bizarro Bob Ross cover. *screams* DRAW AN ANGRY STORM WHEREVER THE HELL YOU WANT. I CARE LESS THAN WHISPERS, BRAH.

Brutally Deceased – Black Infernal Vortex

Home Base: Prague, Czech Republic
RIYL: Subletting your speakers to hornets.
Pedigree: Jig-Ai, Eardelete/Negligent Collateral Collapse, Ahumado Granujo, Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland, Psychotic Despair, Heaving Earth, Feeble Minded

If you read the name and growled, “Grave!” good for you. You're the target audience and Brutally Deceased is the guy in GoldenEye packing the rocket launcher. As soon as the chainsaw vs. garbage disposal (it's like Jackyl's old career vs. Jackyl's new career) tone kicks into gear, your brain gets Gallaghered by unrelenting Swedesplosions. Just, you know, from Czech grind vets. Makes sense.

Dead Instrument – See Through Negative

Home Base: Copenhagen, Denmark
RIYL: The strangely intoxicating altered state of punch drunkenness.
Family Tree: Bottom Feeder

Eight songs, eight minutes, the flailing intensity of an arachnophobe watching Eight Legged Freaks. To steal a line from Yacøpsæ, the closest comp to these Danes, Fuck Punk Rock… This Is Turbo-Speed-Violence!!! Indeed. Also, in the time it took you to read this, you could've spun See Through Negative in its entirety. Why aren't you on an order page? Get your shit together.

Ewig Frost - Dirty Tales

Home Base: Krems an der Donau, Austria
RIYL: Not wincing when the word “billy” is used as a suffix caboose.
Where You Know 'Em: Those guys at the party who reminisce over ancient punk comps.

Enjoy Midnight? Speedwolf? Motöring modern bad-asses? Well, how about if their horsepower pumped the pistons of a corpsepainted The Head Cat? Yeah, one could say Ewig Frost makes the molo n' roll that had its big boom a few years ago blue suede cool. However, it ain't merely hip. EF performs it with a punk snarl and a caveman slap that causes Cramps. Old touchstones, fresh taste.

Goatcraft - The Blasphemer

Home Base: A piano bar in hell.
RIYL: The idea of Ulver playing a mall food court.
Where You Know 'Em: That person who pretends to put up a mock modesty fight at dinner parties and then relents by jamming Chopin.

Too outre not to blurb. Weird music demanding a weird hour, The Blasphemer will play best when matched by the inky abyss of night. Based on the works of William Blake, this all-keys “necroclassical” mind landmine is a total gas, able to sit proudly in your shelf next to Harpsicorpse. That said, this isn't insubstantial haunted house fodder. Check the title track for a melody of Castlevanian ability. Yes, that's a compliment.

Near Death Condition – Evolving Towards Extinction

Home Base: Valais, Switzerland
RIYL: Finding the perfect drill-bit to trepan your thinker.
Family Tree: Lucifer in Love, Enigmatik, DarkRise

WHOA. So, uh, this is where we all thought Vital Remains should be by now, right? The ludicrous orchestral hits. The speed. The snnnrrrts of speed. WHOA. A third of the br00fophony, it's a well-produced Brodequin, then it's a cranky Anata, then it's PURE EFFING EVIL. If you were penning a death metal eulogy, sacrifice it to a Zippo. DEATH LIVES.

Home Base: Turin, Italy
RIYL: Scouring Erowid in a quest for total mind expansion.
Pedigree: Tronus Abyss

Nibiru tunes down as if they were tasked with waking up Sons of Otis from the other side of the ocean. Calling Nibiru loud is like calling people by their given name. Yeah, no kidding Rust Cohle, did you spot that from the freaking name tag? Yet, it's not solely the volume that sets Nibiru apart. Their stonery, sludged-up drone has a disabling property. It's as close as you'll get to feeling akin to a cow in between the moment it's bolted and the infinite blackness of purgatory's pasture. You simply sort of sit there, transfixed, and let these two discs bisect your body. Moo.

Spirit Descent – Anthem

Home Base: Hamburg, Germany
RIYL: Whispering Candlemass-isms whenever triggered by certain phrases.
Pedigree: Detracted, Violence Unleashed, Cold Embrace, Holy Moses, Inc, Incubator

The most-underrated epic doom element? A killer crooner. Jan Eichelbaum ain't Patrick Walker, though he has the same effect, wringing every ounce of relatable vulnerability from a genre sometimes stuck spotlighting the inhuman. Of course, the backing band's infusion of slo-mo Leif riff chlorophyl certainly doesn't hurt the energy production. Sorrow is the sun, in this case. Enjoy the expended oxygen.

Suffering Mind – Suffering Mind

Home Base: Lublin, Poland
RIYL: Collecting all of those pesky splits on one disc.
Pedigree: Hellisheaven
, Enth

Suffering Mind slots in as a more technical Eaten from our last round up, but don't call 'em regurgitated. They'd make Assück smile thanks to ultra thick riffs able to hit top speed faster than a spyware infection from a Russian downloading service. Quick note from the pit boss: We're cheating. This disc collects past works. Whatever. Enjoy the pummeling? Good, a split with P.L.F. is on the way in May. At this rate, comp numero dos will surface in June.

Walk Through Fire – Hope Is Misery

Home Base: Gothenburg, Sweden
RIYL: The sound of a heart getting torn to shreds.
Pedigree: Abandon, Relevant Few

Abandon was a favorite in the MR era. Where sludgsters and post-metallers play-acted pain, you recognized Abandon's cathartic release as legit. You could commiserate. It felt real, as if those suffering souls finally found their outlet and wanted to channel a lifetime of bad days into the metal equivalent of blue notes. It felt earned. Walk Through Fire is built upon Abandon's broken body, squealing with the same metal on metal howl of its ancestor. It's doom. Real doom. The finality we all must prepare to face and embrace.
