Hi there. I don’t take it personally either, and irony has been a part of his shtick from the very start of course. But my impression from that show was that irony is all he has left these days, that he has nothing else to say within the confines of metal other than pointing at himself and going “look at this, it’s really a bit stupid”.
I’m just having a hard time imagining how being an ironic metal musician first and foremost can be fulfilling for such a talented guy. And it’s not clear to me that he’s doing it from a position of love, as it seems to be to you. I don’t know, it just seemed very laboured, stale and artificial to me.
Maybe I’ve just fallen out of love with his music and that’s the whole story.

I don’t get this comment. You’re suggesting that because DT takes the piss out of metal so much, he should give up and play in a different genre altogether? If so, why? It’s clear that he does it from a position of love so I don’t take it personally. Even if he hated metal, the things he mocks are pretty fucking stupid so again, I wouldn’t take it seriously. *shrug*

That’s been my favourite Priest tune since I first heard Priest Live in1987. Great, great song. I could perhaps do without Breaking the What? at every single show, but Metal Gods rules. And I love how they (almost) always play it second. Like the opener is still a surprise by then boom – you know you are getting a classic Priest show when those chords kick in and Halford starts stomping around the stage.

I saw him on tour last summer, and sadly I got the impression that they aren’t mere tendencies anymore. They’re basically his fulltime job now. All irony, almost no substance. Which strikes me as strange, why remain within the musical language of metal and at the same time have a constant urge to ironize it? It also makes me a bit sad. He used to be an incredible performer (also outside of SYL). His live voice still is scary good though.

Sorry… had to get that off my chest apparently. On topic: Agree 100% on “Metal Gods”, always found that one a bit boring.
I admit, I sometimes find myself on the other side of the argument though. Mostly because there aren’t too many good venues in my area, so seeing a band every 2 years just doesn’t happen for me. So I have been a bit miffed occasionally when a band left out a classic I love (Overkill without “Overkill”, New Model Army without “I Love The World”, Moonspell without “Mephisto” off the top of my head). On the other hand, I also know the feeling you get when a band surprisingly plays a fave of yours, so all is good. 🙂
