Staff Infections: March 2018

Welcome, friends, to another edition of Staff Infections, wherein the Last Rites staff shares its collectively impeccable taste in music with the general public. This month, as has become typical, no runaway favorite has emerged, as we are a diverse bunch with diverse tastes. Actually, we’re not that diverse; we are predominantly a bunch of middle-aged dudes, but we listen to a lot of music, metal and otherwise. In any event, our diverse and impeccable tastes have managed to converge around three albums this month. First, Messa’s Feast for Water, which sounds, to my entirely uncultured ears, a bit like Norah Jones fronting Sleep. The doom train keeps a-rollin’ with Mournful Congregation’s The Incubus of Karma. I’m guessing that’s a concept album, because it’s going to take more than one song to explain exactly how karma gets fucked in its sleep. Well, they’ve got plenty of time as it turns out, because The Incubus of Karma is eighty assuredly exhilarating minutes long. Finally, Slugdge has a concept we can more easily wrap our heads around: space slugs. Esoteric Malacology is the recently released fourth installment of slime-fi melo-death from the English duo. Reviews of all three albums are hopefully forthcoming, but in the meantime, enjoy some samples below.
