Here we are in July, dear readers, and we at Last Rites Hope you’ve been keeping your grill hot, your beverages cold and your sunscreen liberally applied. For our American readers, we hope you made it through Independence Day with all your fingers still attached, and without some shithead neighbor(s) calling the cops and ruining the fun for everyone because their precious, should-have-been-put-down-five-fucking-years-ago dog was scared. It’s one god-damned day a year, for Christ’s sake. Lighten up, you miserable, old bastards.
Anyway, this here is Staff Infections, wherein the Last Rites staff shares what they’ve been listening to for the past month or so. There was no runaway favorite this time around, but there are several albums with a few playlist appearances a piece, so let us highlight a few of them.
Due to the untimely passing of Vinnie Paul last month, some of us on staff, myself included, have been salving our grief with Vinnie’s music. I realize Pantera is a polarizing band, particularly in the underground metal community, but I can’t ever pretend that I didn’t love them. Their music was the soundtrack to untold tons of weight lifted in high school, and their shows—oh so many shows—were some of the best times I’ve ever had. Our own Dave Pirtle penned an eloquent and heartfelt tribute to Vinnie, which you can read right here. The song below—“Becoming,” from 1994’s Far Beyond Driven—was supposedly born from one of Vinnie’s drum patterns, and it’s always been one of my favorites. Have a listen. And maybe smash something.
A few other favorites this month include the recently released death metal triumph, Abiogenesis, from Burial Invocation (some asshole wrote about it here), the seriously rotten debut from Mortuous, Through the Wilderness (some handsome, witty fellow wrote about it here), and finally, some pure second-wave styled black metal from Nahtrunar in the form of Mysterium Tremendum. Konrad Kantor has some words about in part four of our Missing Pieces feature, wherein you can also read up on a host of great 2018 releases that have not been previously covered here at Last Rites.
Until next month, take care of yourselves. Be sure to share your playlist in the comments. And if you’re not too cool for school, share your favorite Pantera song as well.

Pantera’s peak was smack in the middle of my teen years, and first three albums still get some pretty regular spins. Favorite song, how about a half-dozen: Cemetery Gates (naturally), The Art of Shredding, Primal Concrete Sledge, This Love, Shedding Skin, and I Can’t Hide. Also, Dime’s interpretation of Planet Caravan’s solo is an all-timer for me.

The sadness keeps on coming. RIP Vinnie Paul and Bret Hoffmann.
Favorite Pantera track..it’s gotta be a deep cut from Vulgar. Regular People wins for me. Spot on comments about how polarizing they are. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve had to argue that “Pantera is not thrash”. Pantera still carried the torch during the worst metal years of the late 90’s, and admirably so. For being more of a NWOBHM/Thrash guy, Pantera means a boatload to me.
