Have you ever wondered to yourself just what the learned, well-mannered and temperate folks at Last Rites have been listening to during any particular month? Well, friends, you’re in luck, because we have this little feature we call Staff Infections, and it will satisfy your every curiosity as to the Last Rites crew’s listening habits.
As is tradition, we will highlight some of the most frequently occurring albums in the playlists this month. As you might know if you’ve been reading Last Rites for a while, ever increasing numbers of the Last Rites staff and esteemed associates make the annual pilgrimage to Maryland Deathfest, which takes place every Memorial Day weekend in Baltimore. As you might also know, we are pretty big fans of The Chasm around here, and it just so happened that The Chasm made a rare live appearance at this year’s MDF, and I think I can speak for the entire group when I say we were fucking impressed. Personally, I thought the band was better live than on record, and the records are pretty spectacular. Hot off this wonderful experience, the staff has been binging on The Chasm’s music, and so the group’s entire discography takes the blue ribbon this month. I don’t think it would be appropriate to offer a sample from every one of their albums, but thanks to smartphones and YouTube, I can offer you a little taste of The Chasm’s MDF set.
As for second place, it’s a three-way tie this month featuring another Maryland Deathfest performer and staff favorite, Immolation (with its most recent album Atonement), the latest self-titled album from doom legends Saint Vitus, and the recently released Zentrum from Valborg. Enjoy some samples from each below, be sure to share your own playlist in the comments, and tell us the best live band you’ve ever seen. Until next month, stay hydrated and be careful with fireworks.

Maybe I’m just a bit slow to catch up on new releases, but at the midway point of this year, there’s definitely not as many new albums that I’m as excited about as in recent years past. Other than the new Venom Prison and Misery Index, I haven’t really found myself coming back to a lot of stuff. (Ok I’ll add Nasheim, Traveler, and Vehemence to the equation, and new Arch/Matheos is also making a run for it too.) I guess this is just a way of saying I’m still looking forward to being blown away by some new releases this year.
