Staff Infections – October 2019

Welcome, friends, to a belated edition of Staff Infections. I know you’ve all been eager to find out what your pals at Last Rites have been listening to, but we had an important staff event Last Weekend, so Staff Infections was delayed. I blew it off, is what I’m saying. Curiously, just as the staff managed to converge last weekend so, too, have the staff’s listening habits. To a larger degree than has been recently typical, at any rate. We have a clear-cut album of the month this time and some strong runners-up. Let’s see who came up big.

In a tie for third place we have something old and something new: Anacrusis’s debut Suffering hour from 1988, and from earlier this month, Profetus’s feel-good record of the year, The Sadness of Time Passing. Captain has the dirt on The Sadness, if you find yourself riding a little too high. Second place is also a tie this month: more doom in Ruins of Eternity, the forthcoming (long-awaited) sophomore album from Orodruin, plus some progressive rock / metal from Opeth. A review of Ruins of Eternity is possibly forthcoming, but if you’d like to jump into the Opeth pissing contest, Zach Duvall has authored a detailed and laudatory review, and the comment section is always open. Finally, the big winner this month comes from a long-time staff favorite, Blut Aus Nord, with its latest avant-garde black metal opus Hallucinogen, which has been thoroughly absorbed and expounded upon by our own Manny-O-War right here.
