Staff Infections – February 2020

Welcome, friends, to another edition of Staff Infections, wherein the Last Rites staff share what we’ve been listening to for the past month or so. And Christ on a pony, what a horrible god-damned month it’s been. Not only did we lose one of the greatest drummers in rock, Neil Peart, seemingly out of nowhere, we also lost Sean Reinert, one of the greatest drummers in death metal, plus hardcore / crossover / metal legend Reed Mullin from Corrosion of Conformity. If you know the staff like I know the staff, you’d know this Staff Infections was only ever going one way: Rush all over the place. If you need more evidence of how much the staff loves Rush, you can read several tributes to Neal Peart right here. Enjoy a little something each from Neil, Sean and Reed below.

While Rush dominated the playlists and easily seized first place, Eastern Europe owns second place with a tie between Hungary’s Thy Catafalque, with its recently released album Naiv, and Slovakia’s Malokarpatan, with its forthcoming release Krupinské Ohne. You can likely expect a review of Krupinské Ohne in the near future, but you can read a review of Naiv right here. Samples from both albums are also featured below.

As is now the norm, we have a spiffy Spotify playlist that features tracks hand-picked by the staff. While you listen, please share your own playlist in the comments, and while you’re at it, share your favorite tunes featuring Neal Peart, Sean Reinert, and / or Reed Mullin. Until next month, let’s all try to stay healthy in both body and mind.

    1. C.O.C. has done some great shit with Pepper singing, no doubt, but, for my money, Blind is the best god-damned thing they ever did.

      1. Much as I love Deliverance and Wiseblood, Blind will still be my favourite from the moment I watched “Dance of the Dead” on Headbanger’s Ball. \m/
