It’s time once again, dear readers, to gape in awe at the Last Rites staff’s sublime taste in music. Don’t gape too long, though. Instead, take notes, so that one day, with the right amount of knowledge, refined listening habits and a healthy does of toxic elitism, you can be almost as cool as us. Don’t be afraid to reach for the stars, kids.
The world keeps spiraling into an authoritarian shit abyss, so we’ll suspend the current events talk this month. I would, however, like to offer my condolences to those of you who may have recently lost or are in imminent danger of losing your reproductive rights.
Let’s see who this month’s big winners are. First we have some honorable mentions for Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death, each of whom have multiple playlist appearances with assorted albums from their respective discographies. Now, on to the big winner. Technically, we have a three-way tie for first place, Including the recent released A Light for Attracting Attention from the Radiohead-related group The Smile, and the also recently released Closure / Continuation, the comeback album from prog masters Porcupine Tree. Sadly, the aforementioned titles have been disqualified for not being metal, and so our album of the month is Thought Form Descent, full-length number six from Canadian grind / black / death group Wake. As Thought Form Descent doesn’t hit the street for a few weeks, and as of yet, we have no review. Spencer and Andrew have obviously been enjoying some promo copies, though, so perhaps you can expect a review in the near future.
As always, be sure to have a listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist below, and share your own playlist in the comments. While you’re at it, in light of recent events, share with us your favorite anti-Christian and / or Satanic metal song. Personally, I love the meat-headed groove of Venom’s “In League with Satan”. Until next month, you all take care of yourselves, and don’t stare too long into the shit abyss.

Favorite anti-Christian/Satanic song, lately it’s been anything off of Seven Churches, but I’ll say “The Exorcist.” Depeche Mode’s “Blasphemous Rumours,” Bathory’s “Sacrifice,” and even John Lennon’s “Imagine” are on that list too.
Porcupine Tree – Closure / Continuation

Judas Priest – Screaming for Vengeance
Barren Earth – Curse of the Red River
Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Charlie Griffiths – Tiktaalika
Blut Aus Nord – Disharmonium – Undreamable Abysses

In terms of anti-Christian, it’s hard for me to go past The Ocean’s Heliocentric / Anthropocentric. Though any number of Anaal Nathrakh tracks would also fit the bill – You Can’t Save Me, So Stop Fucking Trying being as good an example as anything they’ve released. In terms of anything satanic, I have a soft spot for Gorgoroth’s Antichrist, which I guess would be more thematically satanic because I have no fucking idea what the lyrics are or what they mean.
Defect Designer – Neanderthal
Mastodon – Discography up to and almost excluding Once More ‘Round the Sun
Burzum – Dischography (yes, ALL of the synth bullshit included. You gotta embrace the suck)
Hypermass – Empyrean
Chaotian – Effigies of Obsolescence

As a Norwegian, I have to go with some classic black metal. Satyricons “Hvite Krists Død” will do nicely!
