Howdy, friends and neighbors. It’s time to see what your Last Rites pals have been listening to in a little piece we call Staff Infections. Someday, if you’re all unlucky, I might tell you why I don’t find that title very fucking funny at all. It’s a long story involving gore, minor disfigurement, motorcycles, synthetic narcotics, illegal firearms, bleach baths, Maryland Deathfest, shitloads of antibiotics and an almost complete loss of dignity. However, the present seems dark enough that I don’t feel like digging up trauma from the past, so let us proceed directly to the musical discussion.
We have quite a few runners-up for album of the month this time around. In fact, there is a four-way tie for second place, beginning with Heaving Earth’s latest tech-death triumph, Darkness of God, a review of which can be found here, courtesy of Mr. Hotz. Next, we have the sublimely titled The Sound of Rancid Juices Sloshing in Your Coffin. As this gem was released in 1998, predating Last Rites and Metal Review, you’ll have to seek insight about it elsewhere. Then again, it’s goregrind, so I’m sure you can guess what it sounds like. Rounding out second place are a pair of albums from long-running Japanese avant-garde black metal group Sigh, including 1995’s Infidel art and the soon-to-be released Shiki. You are out of luck for a review of the aged Infidel Art, but there’s still hope for a review of Shiki in the near future. Finally, we have come to this month’s big winner, which is ¡Tienes Que Luchar! by Chilean one-man trad / power metal outfit Vórtize. We don’t have a review for that one either, but you can check it out for yourself right here.
Alright, kids, before we wrap this up, let’s talk about something near and dear to my heart: hot dogs. I’m a man possessed of a sophisticated palate. As such, I have a taste for highly processed ground meat stuffed into cow intestine. And, my cultured friends, I know you do, too. So, in the waning days of grilling season, please share with me in the comments your favorite way to dress your dog. For myself, it’s Texas hot style, which includes mustard, onions and Texas hot sauce. This style, colloquially know as a barf dog, slime dog, or shit canoe, is similar to, but not exactly like, a chili dog. It also has nothing to do with Texas, having originated, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, in Western New York. If you’re curious you can order the sauce mix packets here.
Be sure to have a listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist just below, and share your own playlist in the comments. Until next month, you all take care of yourselves.
