First, the runners-up, three albums from two bands: A Forest of Stars with both Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes and Stack Overflow in Corpse Pile Interface, and Emperor with the classic Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. If you know the Last Rites staff like I do, this month’s winner is no surprise. A disappointment, but no surprise. Neurosis has returned (minus one shithead, thankfully) with its first album in a decade, An Undying Love for A Burning World, and I’m sure the band’s fans are thrilled. I am not. As is quite typical the staff listening habits vary a great deal, but in a few instances they have converged, resulting in a three-way tie for album of the month. First in our winner’s triumvirate is Desert Collider with Generation Ship: Endless Drift Through Infinity. A review of this fuzzy behemoth of an album by Dan “The Man” Obstkrieg can be found right here. Secondly, we have long-running Polish black metal quartet, Furia, with 2023’s Huta luna. And, finally, closing out our trio of winners is Floridian / Canadian symphonic black / death / doom group Worm with its latest album Necropalace.

For our group discussion this month, let’s keep it light and easy: After a long cold winter, what kind of metal do you reach for to thaw your blood out for spring? Personally, I find myself enjoying brutal death metal more as the temperature rises. Something about the genre’s suffocating intensity warms my bones.

First, an honorable mention must go to Blizzard of Jozzsh for giving Marduk a fighting chance at album of the month. Unfortunately for Marduk, Jozzsh didn’t get any help from the rest of the staff, but damn, pal, that’s a lot of Marduk. We had quite a few contenders for album of the month, resulting in a three-way tie for second place, including the Agalloch classic The Mantle and another classic in Immolation’s Unholy Cult. Rounding out second place is Hip-Hop duo Armand Hammer and The Alchemist with their recent album Mercy. The big winner this month is Ectoviod with it’s hot-off-the-press third album, In Unreality’s Coffin. Ectovoid’s drummer C.M. is one of the Last Rites old guard, so, as you can imagine, we’re pretty happy to see Ectoviod back in action.

For our group discussion this month, let’s do some metal-related new year’s resolutions. Share with us, if you will, anything metal-related you’d like to change, explore, revisit etc. in the coming year. For myself, I’d like to get back to writing something for Last Rites besides this here monthly feature. We’ll see if I can fit it into my all ready pretty full schedule of doom-scrolling, Helldiving, fairly shitty guitar playing, and anguishing over the future of my country.

Since Paradise Lost already got the spotlight last month, let us take some time to remember a true metal legend who recently past: Tomas “Tompa”, “Goat Spell” Lindberg. Tompa was, of course, most well known as the vocalist of At the Gates, but he was a prolific artist, performing in numerous bands throughout his nearly forty-year career, including Grotesque, Disfear, The Crown, Nightrage, and Lock Up, to name but a few. Furthermore, Lindberg was very active in the underground tape trading scene in the eighties and early nineties that helped to spread the word of death and black metal around the globe. In addition to being an elite screamer, Thomas had some talent in the graphic arts, having designed Darkthrone’s logo. Tomas was a warrior not just for metal, but music in general for almost his entire life, and although that life was tragically cut short, to say the least, the man left a mark. Rest in peace, Tompa, and fuck cancer.

Some popular albums of this summer include Deliquesce’s Saviour / Enslaver, Hexerei’s Realms….., Sulfuric Cautery’s Killing Spree, Wytch Hazel’s V: Lamentations, and Unbirth’s  Asomatous Bersmirchment. It should come as no surprise that the big winner is Ozzy Osbourne’s entire discography, both solo and with Sabbath. I was fortunate to get into Black Sabbath early in my metal journey, and I’m an old son of a bitch, so I’ve had Ozzy singing in my now-tinnitus-ridden ears for at least thirty-five years. Suffice it to say, I’m going to miss that maniac, and I’m sure you all will too.
