Our History

A Brief History of Time:

Last Rites has been in the business of writing about metal since 2001. In the beginning, we were known as MetalReview and spent a decade under that banner exploring all the good, bad, ugly and beautiful corners of this prodigious genre. We built an active community of like-minded individuals, many of whom are still a part of our family, and some of whom now toil in the LR pits to provide the content you read today.

In December of 2012, the crew made a decision to switch from MetalReview to Last Rites. It was a difficult compromise, but we felt the need for a big change, and for something that would help give us a more distinctive edge in the ever-expanding heavy metal blogosphere. Some might still consider us dinosaurs living in a modern age, but that’s a badge we’re actually very proud to wear; our collective crew has a deep respect for the roots of heavy metal, and some of us have been a part of the scene for three decades and counting. We’re not afraid of change, however, even if we occasionally have to be dragged into it kicking and screaming.

Today, Last Rites has over 7500 reviews and 1000 special features under its collective belt, a chunk of which we’ve chosen to leave behind, for reasons best left to those who’ve chosen to selectively abandon. We look forward to adding to that tally as we continue to grow and explore this wonderfully diverse genre, and we hope you’ll join us in that exploration.

Bands looking to contact us for review or interview requests: We currently have too much to consider via our regular PR/label channels, so we are not taking submissions directly from bands. However, our crew is relentless in its pursuit of quality material, so if you’re good, we’ll probably find you.
