Krisiun – AssassiNation Review

Synopsis:
This is Krisiun. They have several records out, and they play fast-to-blast technical Death Metal, record it perfectly, release it to us and don’t fuck around.

Review:
I happen to think this band is one of the most solid death metal bands currently running. I say solid, not mind blowing or utterly unbelievable. They play the same style they started out playing, more or less. But I will be fucked even blinder if they don’t do it with ferocity, panache and talent. And in the final count that’s all that really matters for any Metal band.

If any of you haven’t heard them before…what the fuck? But what they do is a slightly South American flavored style of Brutal/Tech consisting of marching rhythms with lightning guitar licks transitioning into blasting riffs and lacerating lyrical slashes. They will change tempos on a dime, and each song will always have a satisfyingly tasty solo or drum riff. They spice up their records with the occasional instrumental, in this case acoustically atmospheric. It’s all formulaic, and it’s nothing other bands aren’t doing – think Hate Eternal and Morbid Angel at their fastest and heaviest for a good idea. But these guys have been at it for a while and, while you shouldn’t expect anything revolutionary you can expect quality in performance and recording. The production is clear and lean.

Bottom line: I didn’t walk into this review expecting anything other than what I got. This is a fucking great Metal band. They do nothing wrong. I do wish they would expand things a little in the songwriting department. “Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It” only holds true for so long. But if they aren’t going to mix things up at least the formula they stick with is above reproach. Other bands may write more interesting, varied compositions, but no band does Brutal/Tech Death better in the execution department. For the idiot Broots among us this release is a given. For the rest, if you enjoyed any of Krisiun’s other discs, or any other Brutal Tech Death bands even if you haven’t heard Krisiun, this is a very solid release. Look into it.

I write for Last Rites, but in my mind it is spelled Lassed Writes because I am a dreamer.
