Rose Funeral – The Resting Sonata Review

Stab stab stab. Stab chop chop stab. Punch. Stab stab swing. Chop swing chop. Stab. Fall down. On my way home from seeing the new Friday the 13th remake, I cranked some Rose Funeral: Thrash blast thrash breakdown. Breakdown continued. Breakdown continued. Deep guttural response. Breakdown continued. More breakdown. Grind. Breakdown. Silence. This was the moment of truth….The Resting Sonata needs visual aids.

Yep, it’s a handicap that this Hot-Topical take on Carcass/At The Gates worship needs some assistance, but it works quite well when you chase it with its parallel: big, dumb killing machines hacking up hot naked chicks with machetes, bad acting, and predictability. The monotony of Sonata is in need of a crutch, but not a coffin. At least there’s a pulse in the zip-lock of their playing: Rapid-fire double-kicking underneath buzzsaw tremolo picking that sounds as smooth as train tracks. But for those of you that had anything to do with Crucify.Kill.Rot., a kiddie Cannibal Corpse for 2007, consider that one a bit more able. Their 2009 has less angles and a less threatening injection of melody, which is to say that trying to find substance inside forty-three minutes of the same couple of riffs slightly rearranged will leave you with nil. So don’t think. Flatline for this one. Believe me, there is a time and a place for this, and it starts with the sounds of flies swarming and men dying (“Exordium: The Fall Of Christ”), and then on down into the amped up “Sodomizer” which commands in exactly the kind of way that only a tune called “Sodomizer” can: Guitars tuned down to Z, that note then thoroughly abused, and taken through all of the twists and turns of a cul-de-sac, with dual vomit vocals in the driver’s seat. Wash, rinse, repeat. It’s as simple as that, folks. Fun, but not fundamental.

You get what you slay for.
