RIP Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus

Gwar Frontman Escapes Earthly Imprisonment

Last Rites is saddened to hear of the passing of Gwar frontman Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus. You can love ’em or hate ’em or think they’re just okay, but you have to admit that Gwar was a unique phenomenon that transcended beyond the metal world into a legitimate, and utterly bizarre, place within pop culture. Famed for their fluid-soaked stage show, Gwar was more than just a metal band — Gwar was performance art, a multi-media onslaught upon good taste, all performed with tongues firmly in cheek.

As both the band’s longest-running member (the only one to appear in every incarnation of Gwar), and as their distinctive booming-voiced vocalist, Oderus Urungus was the most prominent part of the band’s madness. His appearances on Fox News, Joan Rivers, and Jerry Springer were among the best moments any of those shows would ever offer.

Urungus and Brockie were true originals, and they will be missed.

Sad whale, baby.
