Staff Infections – September 2018

Welcome once again, friends, to Staff Infections, the monthly review of just what the heck the Last Rites Staff has been listening to. With autumn right around the corner, we can expect a raft of high profile releases to hit the street. For whatever reason, a lot of the big names seem to put out albums in the last few months of the year. Voivod, Horrendous, High on Fire, Behemoth, Hate Eternal, Bloodbath and Anaal Nathrak, to name a few, all have new music on the horizon. In fact, the fun has already started for the Last Rites staff, as Satan’s latest record, Cruel Magic, was released this past week. We do love us some Satan around here, and our intern Ryan serves as the avatar of our affection with his review of Cruel Magic. Not coincidentally, Cruel Magic takes first place in the play list tally this month. Enjoy a taste of Cruel Magic below:

Second place this month is a three-way tie, including some Finnish death metal, some Finnish black/death metal, and—hold on to your hats, kids—some Southern rock. First from the Finish contingent is Megalohydrothalassophobic (That’s the real title, I shit you not.), the forthcoming EP from Abhorrence. Abhorrence feature’s Amorphis’s Tomi Koivusaari, and Megalowhatever is the group’s first batch of new music in twenty seven years. Cap has all the dirt right here. Next up is Luciferian Crown, the soon-to-be-released album from the quartet of fine Christian gentlemen known as Archgoat. Lastly, from seemingly out of nowhere, but actually Jacksonville Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd makes its first appearance in the Staff Infections power rankings, with its final album,  1977’s Street Survivors.
