Sometimes the only way to conquer something is by feeding it. Immersing yourself in it, becoming it. Going against what every instinct embedded in your subconscious screams against in protest. Stepping into the fire, you either succumb to it or learn very quickly how to dance around the flames.
People have often noted the irony of listening to and music when they feel depressed, in all actuality, this is no irony at all. Music has a knack for reverberating with emotions, and it’s not some antidote or mood stabilizer—it is a connection. An ability to relate, something all humans crave to some degree or another. Its open interpretation is easily malleable to person experience, be it victory or struggle. It’s this connection that is often the most rewarding aspect of the listening experience, which, in the case of Suspiral, scares the ever-loving shit out of me.
Release date: May 10, 2019. Label: Sentient Ruin Laboratories
As far as the composition itself, Spain’s Suspiral appears to be doubling down on the dissonant, hypnotic passages on “Antithesis Of Time.” It’s the latest track unveiled off their upcoming effort Chasm
, their first full-length since 2016’s excellent Delve Into The Mysteries Of Transcendence
. The boost in production from the rawer, hazy atmosphere of Mysteries
only sharpens the blackened instruments of psychological terror—like lifting a veil, or removing a metaphysical condom and exposing the subconscious to all sorts of mental infection and spiritual disease. The mesmerizing cacophony evokes pangs of anxious discomfort before the wail of guitar soloing starts hot-wiring the hypothalamus to induce total panic. Similar to the band’s previous work, the noisy, hypnotic nightmare builds up to breakout riffs, this time delivered in a more mid-tempo, almost doom styling as the tortured vocals cry out atop the crumbling iron walls of the mind’s resistance to its darkest fears. This section breaks the tension like a feeling of revelation, washing over like a dark illumination of the inner self. This release of tension only adds to the weight of the riffing as it pounds the point home while the screams of anguish that serve as the vocal component explore an amalgamation of suffering.
The track closes with a cool down, as carefully crafted feedback echoes through the hollow atmosphere, allowing the subject to reflect on just why they connect with such profound terror. Or why it feels so good to have your deepest fears shadowed in the sound waves that have been manipulated to instill maximum discomfort and anxiety. Step into the flames created by Suspiral, and learn to dance around the terrors and fears that haunt us all, whatever they may be.
Chasm releases May 10th, 2019, and you can preorder here for the North American release via Sentient Ruin Laboratories (LP/Cassette) or here for the European release via Clavi Secretorum (LP/CD).
