Staff Infections – March 2025

Welcome, dear friends, to another edition of Staff Infections, wherein the staff here at Last Rites share what they’ve been listening to for the past month. Everything is still terrible here in the U.S.A., so we’re skipping the current events portion of the intro this month. I could comment on Brent Hinds recent departure from Mastodon, but I’m not a fan of the band, so my commentary would be worthless. Maybe that’s what I could offer you today, a little pearl of wisdom: If you don’t know shit, don’t say shit.

There was not much competition for album of the month this time around, so before we get to that, let us see what else folks have been listening to. Jozzsh has been exploring the entire Coroner catalog, but don’t miss out on Death Cult demo there Jozzsh. Tom G. Warrior fronting Coroner is about as cool as it sounds. Ryan was binging Deceased last month, and this month he’s on to Voivod. Ryan is a man refined taste and good character. Following his lead will seldom steer you wrong. Mr. Hams has been enjoying a couple Cryptopsy classics in Blasphemy Made Flesh and None so Vile. Solid choices, I think we must all agree. As for the big winner this month, its Danish quintet Scimitar, with its black occult rock debut album Scimitarium I. No review as of yet, but you can check out the band’s Bandcamp page right here for a taste.

For our group discussion this month, in light of our asshole-in-chief’s ill-considered trade war, give us you favorite Mexican, Chinese and / or Canadian metal band. I don’t think I have a Chinese favorite, but from Canada I’ll go with Razor, and from Mexico I choose The Chasm.

That’s all for this month. Be sure to share your own playlist in the comments, and have a listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist below. Until next time, here’s hoping you and yours weather the storm.

Riffs or GTFO.

  1. Year of the Cobra – S/T (it just dropped on 2/28, so it’s gonna show up next month too, but it’s taken up a huge portion of my listening in the last week).
    Mercyful Fate – Melissa
    Over Kill – Ironbound
    Power Trip – Nightmare Logic
    Strigoi – Vescera
    Messa – Close

Razor is most likely my favorite Canadian metal band. As for Mexico, I’ve listened to a couple, but not enough to have a solid opinion at the moment. In light of that, for my favorite Mexican band, doesn’t even have to be metal, I’ll take whichever band pisses off ol’ Distended Donald the most.

  2. Pat Metheny Group- travels (live)
Piah Mater- under the shadow of a foreign sun
    Opeth- pale communion
    Enslaved- heimdal
    Crypt sermon- Stygian rose
    Caligulas horse- charcoal grace

My mouth is actually watering waiting for the new messa. Not many bands out there have that effect on me.

I dunno about Mexico but I’m a big forteresse fan as far as Canada goes

Not really sure about Chinese and Mexican bands, but it’s hard to talk about Canadian metal without talking about Voivod, Devin Townsend, and Rush.

    1. That Gloomy Reflections is so good. I missed it when it came out new. I think I’ve listened to it like 50 times through now and its fantastic. Definitely would have been on my top ten last year 🙂
