Staff Infections – January 2022

Happy New Year, friends. It’s time for Staff Infections, wherein the Last Rites staff share what we’ve been listening to over the last month, and hopefully you, dear readers, come away with an appreciation of our fine taste in music and some new tunes to check out. Here’s hoping you and yours passed the holidays in good health and good spirits. I don’t suppose many of us are ringing in 2022 with shit-loads of optimism. I’d like to think we’re closer to the end of this pandemic than to the beginning, but Omicron isn’t inspiring a lot of hope for a rapid conclusion to this mess. Though times might be tough, carry on we must, and thankfully we have metal to help sustain us. Now, let’s see what we’ve been listening to.

The playlists this month did not have much in common, as only two albums made more than one appearance, resulting in a tie for album of the month with no runners-up. First up is something fresh in the form of the forthcoming album A Nocturnal Crossing, from French doom band Deathbell. Sharing the crown is a US trad-metal classic from 2003, The Lord Weird Slough Feg’s concept album / masterpiece Traveler. I suspect a review for A Nocturnal Crossing is in the offing, but sadly, even though this site was around in 2003 (under the MetalReview banner), we have no review of Traveler in the archives. If you’d like to know more about Slough Feg, check out our Devil’s Dozen from a few years ago.

That’ll just about do it for this month, friends. Check out the Spotify playlist below, which features selections from this month’s staff playlists. And be sure to share your own playlist in the comments. Finally, in the spirit of the new year, rather that share your new year’s resolutions, share a resolution you hope a metal band or individual makes this year. Here’s a couple examples: Dave Mustaine should resolve to be less of a right-wing, Christian asshole in 2021, and Solstice should resolve to not take twenty fucking years to make another album. You get the idea.  See you all next month.
