Howdy, friends. It is time for Staff Infections, wherein we, the Last Rites staff, share what we’ve been listening to, you share what you’ve been listening to, and, hopefully, we all come away inspired to listen to even more music. Since last we spoke, the world is still terrible, probably more terrible, in fact. In addition to the ongoing war of Russian aggression in Ukraine, hurricanes wreaked havoc on both Florida and Canada’s east coast, Iran is in the midst massive protests following the death (I’d put all my money on murder) of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, at the hands of that country’s morality police, and that’s just what I could come up with off the top of my head. If you have the will and the means, I’d urge to support victims of the hurricanes through the charity of your choice and if you can’t give money, donating blood is always helpful. I’m not sure how you can best support Iran, given our track record of fucking over that country, a hands-off approach might be best. Besides, if we had any clue how to effectively deal with religious fundamentalists, America probably would not be half as fucked up as it is. Take notes, I guess, for this could be us soon.
On to our album of the month. We have a clear winner this time, but also a strong second place showing. Our runner up, with three playlist appearances, is Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, the brand-new album from Clutch. I say three appearances, but I’m presuming Andrew Edmunds is listening to some alternately titled special edition of the same album. First place, this month goes to Kansas City Missouri’s Ares Kingdom with its freshly released fifth album, In Darkness at Last. We have reviews for neither album, unfortunately, but you can find reviews of many of Ares Kingdom’s previous releases in the archives. Just use the search button in the upper right corner.
Since Halloween is coming up, for our discussion this month, let us discuss horror. Which do you find more horrifying, the merciless, unstoppable, but impersonal fury of Mother Nature or the abominable atrocities regularly resulting from man’s inhumanity to man. If that’s too grim for you to contemplate, what’s your favorite grind album? Share your answers in the comments, along with your own playlist, and be sure to listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist below. Until next month, stay safe, be kind and listen to lots of metal.
