Staff Infections – May 2024

Greetings, dear readers. It’s time to see what your friends at Last Rites have been listening to, with a feature we call Staff Infections. The battle for album of the month is not particularly fierce this time around, with only two contenders. Captain and Lone Watie gave both King Crimson and Sabbat a push, but, sadly, with no overlapping albums, it was all to no avail. High on Fire’s new album, Cometh the Storm, fared better with two appearances, thanks to Dave Pirtle and myself, and that’s good enough for second place. Edging out Cometh the Storm for the album of the month crown is It Beckons Us All, from the ever-reliable Darkthrone. Mr. Heath has a splendid review for you right here.

As you might have heard, we lost the great Dickey Betts recently. I know the Allman Brothers aren’t even remotely a metal band, but Dickie, and Duane Allman made up one of the great dual-lead guitar teams in rock, at a time when having two lead guitarists was still somewhat uncommon. Dickie and Duane could both solo their asses off individually as well as synch up for some harmonized lead lines, and many a great metal duo has followed in their footsteps. So, in honor of Dickey and Duane, in the comments, give us your favorite lead guitar duos in metal, aside from Tipton / Downing and Murray / Smith, as those are kind of a given.

Have a listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist below, and share your own playlist in the comments. I gotta go take an allergy pill. See you all next month.

I am shocked that there’s been no mention of the new Warlord album on the site. I love it.

  2. It’s been a weird month so far…

    Freeways – Dark Sky Sanctuary
High on Fire – Cometh the Store
Creedance Clearwater Revival – Cosmo’s Factory
    ZZ Top – First Album
    Kid Killowatt – Guitar Method
Dario Russo – Danger 5 OST

Hmm seems like there are not that many other great metal guitar duos other than Priest and Maiden? Maybe Mustaine/Hammett on pre-Kill Em All Metallica, or Mustaine/Friedman?

  3. Edge of Sanity – Purgatory Afterglow
    Alaric – End of Mirrors
    Infestus – Entzweiung
Nevermore – Dead Heart in a Dead World
    Inter Arma – New Heaven
High on Fire – Cometh the Storm
Darkthrone – It Beckons Us All
    Pallbearer – Minds Burn Alive

It’s hard to think of bands with two lead guitars beyond Priest/Maiden. Not sure if Mastodon count, but some of their earlier work like on Blood Mountain has some fantastic guitar interplay. I like the technicality of DragonForce’s lead work but their music otherwise leaves me cold.

  4. Dissection – Storm of the Light’s Bane (both mixes)
    Sonja – Loud Arriver
    Henrik Palm – Nerd Icon
    Metal Church – Metal Church
    Julien Baker – Little Oblivions
    UFO – Phenomenon

Jonathan Hultén and Adam Zaars had gotten to a really great level by “Down Below.” The solos on that are tasteful and gorgeous in the way a player from the ’70s would have been. Sadly a thing of yesterday.
