Howdy, friends. It’s hot. Damn hot. And it’s humid, too. What better way to take your mind off of sweltering than to ponder the cool music your pals at Last Rites are listening to? That’s right, it’s time once again for a little feature we call Staff Infections. The competition for album of the month has been uncharacteristically fierce, with five records vying for the title. Without further ado, let us see how the battle unfolded.
First, we have a three-way tie for third place, featuring some brutal death metal in the form of Deliquesce’s Cursed with Malevolence and Malignancy’s …Discontinued, as well as a more difficult to classify album in Causa Sui’s From the Source. In second place we have the recently released album, A Fortress Called Home, from Symphonic metal outfit Seven Spires. Finally, our big winner this month with five playlist appearances is Violence Inherent in the System, the full-length debut from Cleveland death metal quartet Noxis. Fellow Clevelander El Capitan has a review for you right here.
For our group discussion, since it’s summer and hotter than the hobs of Hell, what metal album do you consider a quintessentially summer album? Metal being a generally grim genre and summer music being most often characterized as “feel good”, I find this question a bit difficult. However, I reckon I’d go with Obituary’s Slowly We Rot, because whenever I listen to that album I picture the Obituary boys sweating their assess off in one of their parent’s garages, creating oppressively heavy music in oppressive heat.
That’ll do for this month. Be sure to share your playlist in the comments and have a listen to the staff-curated Spotify playlist below. Until next month, you all stay cool.

My summer album: Judas Priest, “Screaming for Vengence”. This reminds me of friday night, summertime keg parties in the 80s. So many summer songs on that album.
Screaming is an ALL-TIME summer album!
No doubt about it!
Crypt Sermon – The Stygian Rose
Bathory – Hammerheart
Loudness – Disillusion
The Deathtrip – Demon Solar Totem
Haim – Women in Music Pt. III
Wovenhand – Blush Music
My summer album: I will always remember the great quest to St. Louis to find Exciter – Long Live the Loud in the summer of 1985. My teenage life was experiencing a season of unbelievable darkness and change and successfully finding the third Exciter album on that summer adventure will always be burned in my mind as the quintessential Summer Metal Memory.
Another killer summer pick, and with a great story with it! Love that record, its such a pick-me-up. Could really see it lifting you mighty from the dredges of teen life
Iron Maiden – Powerslave
Tank – Flith Hounds of Hades
Castle Rat – Into the Realm
Angel Sword – World Fighter
Monolord – Your Time to Shine
Undeath – It’s Time…To Rise From Your Grave
I like to throw on some Def Leppard or Raven cruising around or BBQing in the summer. For some reason, I also get in the mood for early Black Sabbath when it’s hot and muggy, not really Birmingham vibes I know.
Ulcerate – Cutting the Throat of God
Ufomammut – Hidden
Pallbearer – Minds Burn Alive
Moisson Livide – Sent Empèri Gascon
Full of Hell – Coagulated Bliss
Sumac – The Healer
Denis Pauna – And Justice For All Death Metal Style
It’s the middle of winter here so it’s hard to think of what I listen to in summer. I’m guessing summer months are when I lean towards more death and prog than in the cold months, but I don’t think my tastes vary that much by season.
Horrifying – Dreadful Parasomnia
Dan Terminus – Gothic Engine
Wormed – Omegon
The Tuss – Rushup Edge
High Castle Teleorkestra – The Egg That Never Opened
Yellow Eyes – Rare Field Ceiling
A summer death metal record. Hmm. Lykathea Aflame. Sounds like all the plants in a hot greenhouse growing at 5x normal speed.
