Staff Infections – April 2025

It’s that time again, friends: Time to see what kind of racket your pals at Last Rites have been shoving in their ears with a little feature we call Staff Infections. Everything still sucks here in America, so we’ll proceed to the music, post haste.

In fact, there isn’t a heck of a lot to talk about on the music front. The competition for album of the month was decidedly weak this time around. So, before we get to the big winner this month we’ll hand out some honorable mentions. Jozzsh listened to the entire Teitanblood discography, including the black / death group’s latest album, From the Visceral Abyss. Not coincidentally Josh has a review of From the Visceral Abyss that you can check out right here. Mr. Hams embarked on a similar journey into the Messa discography, and I’ll be damned if Isaac didn’t come out of it without a review as well. Issac’s take on Messa’s The Spin can be found here. That brings us to our champion this month, the venerable, but vital Cradle of Filth, with its fresh release, The Screaming of the Valkyries. Dan the man has a review for you aqui.

For our group discussion this month, in honor of Cradle of Filth’s victory, give us your favorite non-Scandinavian black metal band. For the record, Finland is not part of Scandinavia, and so Finish bands are eligible. Being honest, I barely give a shit about black metal outside of a handful of bands, and most of them are Scandinavian. However, I like most of the first-wave black metal bands, so I’ll go with the O.G.s: Venom.

Before we wrap up, be sure to listen to the staff-curated playlist just below, and be sure to share your own playlist in the comments. Until next month, you all take care of yourselves.

Favourite non-scandinavian black metallers are plentiful, tbh. Fluisteraars from the Netherlands, Furia from Poland, Moonsorrow from Finland, Deathspell Omega from France…

I could go on for some time I think. Black metal is pretty damn universal Im/_

  8. I second the fluisteraars comment, those guys are on another level.

Also, new Tomarum deserves a space on someone’s listening list, the thing is amazing.
