For those of you who’ve seen Enslaved’s first DVD Live Retaliation, Return to Yggdrasil isn’t a rehash as much as it is a complement. Similar to their studio material, the long-running Norwegians prove they can be at the top of their game in a live setting, though recording a lengthier performance wouldn’t have hurt anyone. In any event, however, RtY is a must-buy for fans of modern-day Enslaved.
\With several players on stage, decent lighting, and a background screen displaying various images and videos, there’s a lot to take in. Still, rest assured that not only do their songs come across exceptionally well, but are also the result of spot-on musicianship. The multiple camera angles – enhanced with excellent audio/video production – survey each stage position nicely, in addition to intermittently catching the audience’s reaction.
Aside from the strong-yet-short set, the bonus portions are worth viewing, too. The post-show band interview ranges from mildly insightful to genuinely entertaining, but perhaps the greatest feature is the 20-minute video shot during their 2005 European Tour. It’s not as if the footage is atypical – tour bus conversations, pre-show antics, and concert excerpts all appear – though it’s nice to see the members of Enslaved temporarily divorced from their music. The “Isa” video, also included, isn’t bad either.
The aficionados who are still on board, and don’t mind the band concentrating primarily on Isa, will find their money’s worth in Return to Yggdrasill. It’s not a definitive DVD by any means, but it’s a solid one that deserves the hunt.
