Staff Infections – June 2018

Breathe deep the pollen, friends—it’s June. While warm sun and the beautiful flowers are temporary, metal blooms eternal, so let’s see what the Hell all your pals at Last Rites have been listening to for the past month.

With three playlist appearances apiece, Tomb Mold’s Manor of Infinite Forms and Cosmic Church’s Täyttyms share first place. A review of Täyttyms, which is the one-man Finnish black metal outfit’s swan-song, is likely forthcoming. In the mean time, you can enjoy a sample below.

As for Manor of Infinite Forms—luckily for us, our intern Ryan, go-getter that he is, managed to finish all his special projects while the rest of the team was at Maryland Deathfest (great job cleaning the fridge, Ryan), so he found time to crush a review. You can read it here.

And speaking of having fun at Maryland Deathfest without Ryan, two of this year’s deathfest performers snuck into second place this month. First is Phrenelith, whose 3:40 set time conflicted mightily with my drinking schedule, but the group apparently made a positive impression on messieurs Kantor and Cooper. If your interest is piqued, Captain reviewed the band’s last release Desolate Endscape. Finally, last-minute Friday night headliners Suffocation ripped the roof off the joint, Frank-less though they were. I love Frank Mullen as much as the next person, but Ricky Myers is doing a bang-up job fronting Suffocation, and not once during the band’s set did I feel I was getting a lesser experience. Still high on the brutality, Konrad and I have been giving that old chestnut Pierced from Within some spins. Give a listen to some Phrenelith and Suffocation while you share your playlist in the comments. And while you’re at it, share one or two of the best live bands you’ve ever seen.

Have a great month, friends.

  3. Best live shows I’ve seen were Tribulation in September, 2016 at the Hopscotch Music Festival and opening for Deafheaven in Carrboro in 2015, Soundgarden opening for Voivod in 1990 and again headlining in November of 1991, King Diamond with Trouble on the “Abigail” tour in 1987. Neko Case in 2010, Morbid Angel with Paradise Lost and Kreator in 1993. Of course, Iron Maiden on December 18, 1984 on the World Slavery Tour was not a bad way to start my concert-going history.
