Following a delightful and speedy introduction in Español courtesy of some Chilean in the know, the same diabolic entrance track this band has been using for years plays and to the jubilation of the audience, it is as they say, on. The live review format allows me the unique opportunity to put aside my own feelings on this band and judge an album purely on its structural and technical merits. I offer no critique on this band’s skill as songwriters here. Recorded during the shockingly popular South American tour of 2003, De Profundis Calmavi Ad Te Domine reportedly contains material from shows in Brazil, Chile and Colombia. This is the band’s first official live album.
To say De Profundis adequately sums up the ten year history of Norsecore flagship act Dark Funeral is what I would call a non-too-devious half truth. I imagine the idea of a perfect summation would sell more records but really what we have here is a live retelling of Diabolis Interium with some older tracks thrown in to help fans feel like they aren’t just being marketed to. Make no mistake, the crowd noise on this recording is ravenous and you the listener will be treated to such semi-laughable gems as “Ole Ole, Dark Funeral.”
The production and performance are all a fan could ask for. The musicians all hold their own, and with the exception of an increased tempo that drummer Matte Modin struggles with on a few occasions, these tracks are energetic recreations of studio recordings. Having the most ridiculous name in all of metal does not hinder Emperor Magus Caligula in the slightest as he destroys his larynx track by track for our enjoyment. The space allowed for each instrument is expectedly snug given the live microphone placement but aside from the compressed feeling of the music in comparison to the intermittent crowd noise, the recording really is prime.
All in all this is a very well crafted piece of fan-only merchandise. I have yet to meet the person with a passionate interest in hearing Dark Funeral for the first time, but if ever I run across this perplexing individual I would certainly point first in the direction of their studio work on Vobiscum Satanas.
